16 NOVEMBER 2024 — In preparation for the busy December travel season, the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) and Manila North Harbour Port, Inc. (MNHPI) have commenced a series of major upgrades to the North Port Passenger Terminal. These improvements are set to enhance convenience, streamline services, and provide a more comfortable experience for travelers, aligning with PPA’s mission to develop a modern and efficient national port system that supports trade and national development.
Historically, North Port has faced challenges during peak travel seasons, including crowded waiting areas. In response, MNHPI, the port operator of Manila North Port, and the PPA have rolled out a comprehensive modernization plan, ensuring a more efficient and seamless experience for passengers during the holiday rush.
A major highlight of the terminal upgrades includes the installation of three brand-new x-ray baggage inspection units, with a project cost of P12.54 million. These advanced machines are set to be operational by December 2024, just in time for the holiday travel season, significantly reducing security check wait times and enhancing passenger flow.
Additionally, the port operator has introduced extended x-ray operations up to 12 hours before the vessel's scheduled departure. This extended timeframe is designed to alleviate last-minute congestion, ensuring a smoother check-in process. In a move to streamline the passenger journey, MNHPI has also integrated the collection of passenger terminal fee to the point of sale of the passenger vessel ticket fee, effective since July 2, 2024. This initiative eliminates the need for passengers to queue separately for passenger terminal fees, allowing for faster entry into the terminal building.
In a move to enhance passenger comfort, MNHPI has completed extensive renovations. These include modernized restrooms in the south wing, arrival areas, and VIP lounges. A fully upgraded air-conditioning system, with a total project investment of P67.2 million, is also set for completion by December 2024, providing a cooler and more comfortable environment for travelers.
Additional terminal enhancements include repainting, new signage, charging stations, upgraded passenger lounges, and improved facilities at Passenger Terminal Concourse for priority passengers such as seniors, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and those requiring special assistance. To prioritize passenger safety, MNHPI has deployed medical personnel on-site and introduced a brand-new ambulance unit, operational since October 31, 2024.
PPA’s commitment to improving passenger experiences is reflected in the recent opening of new Passenger Terminal Buildings (PTBs) across various ports in the country such as the Batangas Port Passenger Terminal Building. These state-of-the-art facilities have successfully reduced congestion and enhanced the travel experience for passengers. The upgrades at North Port align with these nationwide improvements, ensuring consistency in the quality of port services.
With these comprehensive upgrades set to be completed by December, North Port is fully prepared to accommodate the surge in travelers during the holiday season, promising a faster, safer, and more comfortable port experience.
