The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) illuminated its head office as well as iconic landmarks and various Port Management Offices (PMOs) nationwide, with a vibrant blue light symbolizing its unwavering commitment to maritime excellence on September 26, 2024, in celebration of World Maritime Day. This year’s theme, “Navigating The Future: Safety First!” highlights the critical importance of safety within the maritime industry.
Among the illuminated locations are PMO baseports, essential hubs for maritime activities that connect the Philippines to the global maritime network. The radiant blue light not only celebrates the industry’s achievements but also underscores the importance of maintaining high environmental standards within this crucial maritime sector to promote sustainable shipping practices.
“As we celebrate World Maritime Day, the PPA reaffirms its commitment to promoting safety, sustainability, and innovation in the maritime sector, ensuring that our ports not only serve as gateways for trade but also as champions of environmental stewardship and economic resilience. Together, we navigate towards a brighter, safer maritime future,” PPA General Manager Jay Santiago remarked.
In addition to the building illuminations, a video message from the IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez was broadcasted in passenger terminal buildings across various offices, raising awareness about this year's World Maritime Day theme and the critical role of maritime safety and security while prioritizing environmental protection.
Furthermore, the PPA remains committed to combating climate change through various initiatives, including tree-planting efforts aligned with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to integrate reforestation into disaster mitigation projects. From 2020 to August 2024, the PPA has planted a total of 12,297,938 trees, as reported by the PMOs and certified by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
The PPA is dedicated to making significant contributions to the maritime industry and the nation’s economic development through strategic investments in port infrastructure, modernization initiatives, and effective management of the country’s maritime gateways. By enhancing port capacity and operational efficiency, the PPA stimulates economic activity locally and nationally, fostering growth across various sectors.
PPA General Manager Santiago ensures that PPA is prioritizing the safety and security of port facilities through a comprehensive approach addressing global threats such as terrorism, piracy, and smuggling. Key initiatives include the construction of Law Enforcement Buildings (LEB) at critical PPA ports, starting with the Port of Currimao in Ilocos Norte.
“These facilities streamline coordination between PPA and other government agencies like the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Customs, and Philippine National Police, enhancing the government’s ability to detect, prevent, and respond to security threats. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s whole-of-government approach,” PPA General Manager Santiago said.
To bolster these efforts, the PPA has inaugurated the PPA-PCG K9 Academy in Pampanga, the first of its kind in Southeast Asia. This academy specializes in training, breeding, and providing veterinary care for K9 units, which assist the PCG in detecting narcotics, explosives, and smuggling at ports which are crucial hubs for trade.
Moreover, the PPA is committed to complying with the International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code by implementing robust security measures across all port operations to address potential threats. This initiative is reinforced by advanced security technology, including additional CCTV cameras, x-ray machines, metal detectors, and a heightened presence of port police and security personnel. Collectively, these actions enhance port safety, conform to international standards, and help prevent illegal activities.
