PMO Puerto Princesa was organized on June 1, 1977 by the Systems Implementation

   Group (SIG) of the Philippine Ports Authority. This group laid the groundwork for the

   PMO and held office at a rented structure standing on submerged stilts. It coordinated

   the smooth turnover of properties and port responsibilities from the then DPWH and the

   Bureau of Customs, respectively.

 

   The SIG recruited 15 personnel to form the organizational backbone of operations,

   security, finance, administration and engineering. From the original 15 personnel, the

   PMO has now 50 regular employees, 9 casuals, 20 outsourced personnel and 38

   agency security guards.

       The Port of Puerto Princesa is a major port of entry at the island-province of Palawan. 

       Puerto Princesa City is located at the middle of the big stretch of island, and as such,

       serves as the hub of transport (of goods and passengers) activities for both the

       northern and southern municipalities of the Province.

       The PMO embarked on expanding operations to Coron, El Nido, Culion, Cuyo, Brooke’s

       point and the cluster ports of Liminangcong, Taytay (poblacion), Roxas, Narra, San Vicente

       and Araceli.

 Located within a cove on the southeastern coast of Palawan Island, the Port is open to

 cargoes (foreign/domestic; general/containerized) and passengers.

 Incoming cargoes vary from bottled cargoes, construction materials, general consumer

 goods to other finished products.  Outgoing cargoes include marine and agricultural

 products, live animals, furniture, coconut products and other raw materials.

B.   Port Profile

Location:

Latitude 09° 44”N, Longitude 118° 43”E, on the western side of Puerto Princesa, westward

of Princesa Strait, and the western side of Palawan Island. The Port lies 558 meters from a

coral reef on the southern portion of Bancao-Bancao Point. 

Sea Distance:

Sea distance to Manila is 370.6 nautical miles.

Land Access:   

The Port is connected to the City Proper with two-lane concreted road from Rizal Avenue and

another two-lane concreted road from Malvar Street.  Slightly heavy traffic is experienced during

the arrival and departure of vessels. Both approaches have steep slopes making the access

difficult.

Entrance Channel:

A coral reef on the southern portion of Bancao-Bancao Pt. Is 558 meters. Navigational portion

of the channel is one mile off  both sides. There is the buoy of Gideon Shoal bearing 270° from

pier southmost end with a distance of 613 meters from pier.

Turning Basin: 

Maneuvering room area is 500 semi-circle from 43° towards port side up to 223° towards entrance

channel.

Physical Environment:    

Out of prevailing typhoon belt, well-sheltered from any adverse condition. Seabed is muddy and free

from rocks. Tidal currents are not strong and the range is 1.30 meters between MHHW and MLLW.

Anchorage and Fairways:  

Vessels may anchor southwestward of Princesa Point in 12 to 16 fathoms, mud bottom. A

better protected anchorage may be had in 9 to 12 fathoms about 400 yards northward of the

end of the pier.The bay is considered as one of the best harbors in the country, and thus,

a very safe shelter during bad weather.

Pilotage:

Compulsory.  At least 24 hours prior advice of estimated arrival must be sent to

Puerto Princesa Pilots’ Association, Port Area, Puerto Princesa City. There are

two pilots available for pilotage services.

Shore Reception Facility:

Service is provided by the contractor Golden Dragon International Terminals, Inc.

Navigational Aids:  

The bay is equipped with two (2) rotating lighthouses – one in the northern tip of the bay

entrance and the other is in the middle of the northern shore of the bay.

Breakwater:    

None.

Storage Areas:  

There are two warehouses located inside the operational areas:                            

Warehouse 1 – 672 square meters, housing the -

                        Transit and Cargo Shed with a holding capacity

                        of 204 tons, and the warehouse with a holding

                        capacity of 57 tons.

Warehouse 2 – 672 square meters, with a holding capacity

                        Of 1,046 tons.

Container yard has an area of 7,132 square meters/ Marshalling yard

has a 9,000 square meters area with a capacity of 375 TEUs.

Two-way radios, TVs, cable, intercom phones, telephones, FAX, internet.

Safety and Security Features:

The Port Police Division implements the ISPS Code. PPD ensures order and safety inside the port

through control of vehicles, pedestrians, cargo and vessels.  Tighter security measures will be

adopted through the installation of detector and baggage screening equipment at the Passenger

Terminal Bldg. All the buildings have fire extinguishers as required. Safety signs and signboards

are displayed in strategic conspicuous places.

IV.    PORT FACILITIES

 

Medical Facilities:    

 

                        Hospitals and clinics are available within the City Proper.  The Palawan

                        Adventist Hospital, the Puerto Princesa Provincial Hospital, and the

                        Palawan Cooperative Hospital are the three hospitals in the City. There are

                        also the Saver’s Clinic, and the Palawan Medical City attending to the

                        medical needs of the populace.

 V.    CARGO HANDLING SERVICES

 

Arrastre/Stevedoring:  

 

Prudential Customs Brokerage Services, Inc. (PCBSI) provides the cargo handling services

at the Port of Puerto Princesa. (10-year management contract, 2007-2016)

 

Warehousing:  

 

There are two warehouses for common use at the operational area.

 

Container Yard:

              

Shipping companies are renting concreted areas at the port used as container yards.

 

Trucking/Hauling Services:

 

There are trucks providing hauling services, but most of the port users have their own vehicles used for hauling their own cargoes.                                                           

                                   

            Porterage:      

 

            Porterage service is also provided by the cargo handling contractor, Prudential Customs

            Brokerage Service, Inc. (PCBSI)

 

 

VI.      SERVICES FOR PASSENGERS, SHIPPERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC

 

Passenger Terminal Building:          

 

The PTB has an area of 420 square meters.  It has 4 air conditioning units, a child care

station, a massage corner, public phone units, 2 television sets, and can accommodate

300 passengers at one time.

  

Passenger Assistance Service System Building:

 

Area is 429.00 square meters.  A two-storey open structure housing the canteen and

used as holding area for passengers and well-wishers.

 

Vehicle Parking Area:  

 

There is a designated parking area beside the PTB and the PPA Admin. Bldg.  Area is

3, 187.00 square meters. 

 

Booking/Freight Forwarding:

 

There are several cargo forwarders in the City. Booking and freight forwarding are also

serviced by shipping agencies.

 

Banking Services:                

 

There are many local banks in the City (please see Directory of Services)  

 

Telecommunication Services:

 

Smart, Globe and Sun Cellular mobile phone companies have cell sites in the City.

PLDT/Piltel, Globe RCPI provide telephone, telegram and telefax services.

 

There are three internet providers such as Kawing, Moscom, and DSL. 

 

Airport:

 

The city has one international airport, and it is about 3 km from the port. (est. 5-8

minutes ride

Other Passenger Services:        

 

There is one designated terminal for buses, shuttle vans, and jeepneys for passengers going

to northern and southern Palawan.  It is situated at the New Public Market at Bgy. San Jose,

Puerto Princesa City.
