I.        FACT SHEET

 

A.   General Information.       

  The Port of Culion, formerly administered by the Culion Sanitarium, was turned over to PPA by

  the Department of Health in 1995.  The PPA takeover was a strategic factor for the

  development of commercial navigation in Culion, as it paved the way for the construction of a

  reinforced concrete wharf, back-up area and passenger terminal.

The Port of Culion has been the mainstream of economy of the island.  Vessels coming from

Manila via Coron bring in cement, bottled cargoes and consumer goods.  Outgoing cargoes are

fish and fish preparations, to include general cargoes.

 

B.   Port Profile

 

Location:

 

The Port is located at Bgy. Balala in Culion.  The island lies below Busuanga Island, and is about

an hour ride via launches or big pumpboats from Coron.

 

Sea Distance:

 

Cuyo is 174.5 nautical miles northeast of Puerto Princesa and 248 nautical miles south of Manila.

 

Port Area:

       

Total Port Area - 3,279.76 sq.m.

Comm’l. Area  - 1,615.61 sq.m.

Opn’l. Area - 944.25 sq.m.

(Lagoon) - 719.90 sq.m.

 

Land Access:   

 

The port is immediately connected to a main street, and upon exiting the port vicinity, stands the

municipal hall of Culion.

  

Stacking Area: 

 

358.94 sq.m.

III.    VESSEL SERVICES

 

Berthing Areas:             

 

R.C. pier has a total area of 409.50 square meters.  Total berth length is 21 meters.

Fresh Water Supply:

 

Culion Water District (CWD) is responsible for the supply and management of water in Culion .

It currently serves 929 households or approximately 5,574 persons in barangays Balala,

IV.    PORT FACILITIES

 

Medical Facilities:    

 

The Culion Sanitarium General Hospital serves the residents of Culion and nearby islands.

 V.    CARGO HANDLING SERVICES

 

Arrastre/Stevedoring:  

 

Cargo handling operations is being handled by BSD Arrastre and Stevedoring Services, Inc. (BSDASSI).

Warehousing:  

Salakot Bldg. which is 176.00 square meters houses the Arrastre Office and warehouse).                   

 

VI.      SERVICES FOR PASSENGERS, SHIPPERS AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC

 

Passenger Terminal Building:    

     

A two-storey building which also includes the Terminal Management Office of Culion. The PTB

can accommodate 100 passengers at one time.
